Everyone should have a will.

Yet only 1 in 4 people have actually made their will. Maybe because they feel they do not need one, or because death is something that happens to other people, or because they do not appreciate the problems that dying without one can create.

People often assume that when they die their estate will go to the people they want it to. Unfortunately, this does not necessarily happen if there is no will and you die intestate. Under intestacy rules there is a specific order of inheritance which may not reflect what you assumed.

This is particularly relevant where a couple cohabit and are not married or in a civil partnership. For example, if a couple with no children cohabit and the house is in the sole name of one of them, without a will bequeathing that house to the cohabiting partner that partner will not inherit.

It is also relevant where there is a second marriage and providing for children of the first marriage is important.

provide for minor children so that they are financially secure
appoint guardians for minor children
record any desired funeral arrangements

But above all else, making a will can give you the peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be protected and will not have to worry when the time comes.

It is also important to review your will regularly as circumstances change. Marriage and divorce both affect a will; the former will revoke an existing will and the latter will cancel any gifts left in a will to a divorced partner.
